Statement

Extracting the mysterious elements from an ordinary scene of an ordinary day and recreating it.
That can only be done by an artist who has an exquisite sensitivity.
The changing patterns of the sky, the ripple marks that repeatedly appear and disappear, the peculiar living beings.
The universe that is thousands and millions of miles away, has a transcendent beauty that is immeasurable with one’s mind.
The principle of the universal source which runs through everything is reflected in Noguchi’s eyes
and the great trajectory created by that principle projects into her imagination as a story.

The tools which have been used to approach the things humankind have been covering and hiding behind the name “mystery” is art and science.
The crystalline of the soul which attempted to reveal this world’s mystery is what created science.
The beginning of the mystery solving in Greek was the discovery of “Arche” which was succeeded to the alchemists in the medieval era.
They broke down the world into the 5 elements “Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Void” and this orientation opened the doors of science in the modern era.
On the other hand, art discovers the extraordinary out from the ordinary, and has dug deep into how to express and extend these discoveries.
Lascaux, the world’s oldest cave painting is definitely an example of art although it was painted in the era where the word “art” had not existed yet.
These 2 different approaches in researching about the mystery can be thought as the source of creation for an artist.

Historically, glass has come close to being called art and then shut away because of the difficulty in handling it.
Noguchi is attempting to approach this again, for “glass art” to plainly be called “art”.
Glass itself is a mystical material given its substance, due to its transparency, light can pass through and twist freely.
In the process of forming into shape by cooling off from 1400 degrees Celsius which is a very high temperature,
associates with the Big Bang which created infinite stars in the universe.
The Big Bang too is a creation of the process of cooling off from a very high temperature.
I am able to make a non-object presence into an object such as air, water, and space because of the transparency and solidity of glass.
From this, the possibility of the value of glass as a new material to express art can be seen.
Making this possibility into an object is what Noguchi has been consistent throughout her art work.

When people are tamed by society by the law of common sense, the world will look as though it has lost its mystery.
However, an artist that looks into the world as though nothing is ordinary, we will be able to know and see that world again.
Noguchi’s art work is directing us to that path. Where her sensitivity takes her, the truth of the world is waiting.
